Sherry, the wine, is an English mangling of Jerez, the Andalusian town it comes from — English speakers could not manage the Spanish consonant at the front, produced something closer to sherris, and then heard the s on the end as a plural and removed it, leaving a singular that had never existed. The name and the drink are not related in any way. But they land close enough that anyone spelling this name aloud will spend part of their life distinguishing it from a fortified wine named after a town nobody in England could pronounce.
