New England turned its own surnames into first names two centuries before the rest of America did it. Chauncy is one of those: the family name of a Cambridge scholar who ran Harvard in its second decade, handed down through congregations and cousins until it stopped being anybody's surname and became a boy's given name.

How old is the name Chauncy?

Where it comes from

The story of Chauncy

Charles Chauncy came to Massachusetts having quarreled with the Church of England about kneeling and about rails around altars, and became the second president of Harvard when the college was barely twenty years old and nearly broke. He held the post for seventeen years, taught the whole curriculum himself much of the time, and was known for insisting on baptism by immersion in weather that made it dangerous. His descendants filled New England pulpits for generations, and the name went with them, first to sons and grandsons and then to neighbors and parishioners who had no connection to the family at all. That pattern, a respected local surname becoming a regional given name, was a New England habit long before American naming generally took it up.

Meaningnot established

Unknown

The surname is Norman and probably comes from a place in France, of which several have been proposed, but the identification is not secure and the place name's own meaning is not recoverable. Anyone offering a translation of this name is inventing one. What is documented is the family, the migration and the spread of the name in America, which is more than most names can show.

Chauncy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 33 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Chauncy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a documented American history running back to the seventeenth century.
  • Chance is waiting inside it as an entirely current everyday name.
  • The name works for a child of either sex, as surnames used as first names generally do.
What to consider
  • The record carries it for girls as well as boys, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • Chauncey with an e is the commoner spelling and will be written instead.
  • The name carries a strong period flavor and reads as nineteenth-century New England to most Americans.
