Charlene, Charlyne, Charline, Charlette, Charlesetta and Charlean all appear in the same decades, all made from the same front, and the language never settled on one, which is what happens when a gap is filled by improvisation.

Where it comes from

The story of Charlyne

The empire that name built was divided between three brothers and Europe has been arguing about the middle piece ever since. Charlemagne's grandsons split it three ways at Verdun: a western kingdom that became France, an eastern one that became Germany, and a long thin strip down the middle from the North Sea to Italy that had no natural boundaries and no coherence. That middle share is where Lorraine, Alsace, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland are, and it has been fought over more or less continuously since. Two world wars were fought partly along its edges. A family arrangement between three brothers in the ninth century is still visible on the map.

Meaning

Free man

The Germanic word behind Charles described a free man of no rank. The endings attached to it in America are borrowed and carry register rather than meaning, and the fact that several were tried at once shows that none of them was felt to be obviously right.

Fashion outlook

Charlyne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely familiar, so the name is understood immediately.
  • Charlie is available as an everyday form and is entirely current for women.
  • Final stress gives the name a clean finish and makes it carry.
What to consider
  • Six spellings of the same sound circulate, so spelling it out is a permanent job.
  • The name is firmly dated to the first half of the last century in American use.
  • Neither the y nor the final e changes anything audible.
