Chantal
Feminine · “stony place”
Chantal is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 8,469 girls against 7 boys since 1880.
Chantal is a stone, not a song. The widespread gloss connecting it to French chanter, 'to sing', is folk etymology; the name comes from a place in south-eastern France whose name derives from an Occitan word for a boulder. The saint who carries it founded a religious order with Francis de Sales. Its American peak is 1990.

The story of Chantal
Jeanne-Francoise Fremiot, Baroness de Chantal, was widowed at twenty-eight, met Francis de Sales in 1604 and with him founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary, a congregation designed for women whose health or age excluded them from the stricter orders. She was canonized in 1767. French Catholic families took her territorial title as a given name, and it became genuinely common in France in the twentieth century. American use follows French-Canadian, Haitian and Louisiana French communities, and the general fashion for French names in the 1970s and 1980s; the record peaks in 1990.

stony place; a boulder
The place name Chantal in the Saone-et-Loire is generally derived from Occitan cantal, 'stone, boulder', from a pre-Roman root cant. The resemblance to chanter is coincidental, and the 'singing' gloss appears in popular sources without support. Some reference works accept the stone derivation flatly and others treat the place name as uncertain, so the reading is offered here as likely rather than settled.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Chantal's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sherryl climbed just as high around 1946, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sherryl's path sketches the road Chantal is walking now.
