Where it comes from

The story of Chanda

Sanskrit distinguishes retroflex consonants — made with the tongue curled back — from dental ones, and the difference is not decorative: it separates words. Chanda and Chandra differ in exactly that way, and English writes both with a plain d. The result is that two Indian names arrive in American records looking like spelling variants of one another. Chanda has also been built independently in American naming from the Cha- prefix and the -nda ending, which gives the same four letters a third possible history.

Meaning

fierce; passionate

Sanskrit chanda means fierce, impetuous or violent, and Chandi or Chanda is a name of the goddess in her wrathful aspect — the form that fights demons in the Devi Mahatmya. That is a serious and deliberate meaning rather than an accidental one. Chandra, meaning the moon, is a different word with a different consonant in Sanskrit; English flattens the distinction because it has no way to write it. Both are real and they are not the same name.

Pronouncing Chanda

CHAN-duh

CHAN-duh, two syllables, stress at the front, the first vowel short. Sanskrit gives the d a retroflex quality English does not have and the final vowel a fuller value, CHUN-daa. The English reading is what the name gets here.

Chanda sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1976, with 418 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Chanda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Sanskrit meaning is specific and forceful rather than vague.
  • Two syllables, said correctly on first sight, with nothing silent.
  • It works for either child, and the record shows both.
What to consider
  • Chandra is a different word and will be substituted constantly by people who assume they are variants.
  • The meaning is about fierceness, which is a real quality and not a soft one — worth knowing before choosing.
  • The name can be Indian or American in origin and the spelling does not say which.
