Where it comes from

The story of Chadwick

Chad was a seventh-century bishop of Mercia and one of the more important figures in the English conversion; his name is British, and its bearer was venerated widely enough for places to be named after men who carried it. Chadwick is a place in Lancashire and Worcestershire, then a surname, then an American given name — part of the -wick and -ton wave of the nineteenth century. It peaked around 1985.

Meaning

Chad's dairy farm

From the Old English personal name Ceadda plus wic, 'dwelling' or 'specialized farm' — most often a dairy. Wic came into Old English from the Latin vicus, and it is the ending of Warwick, Norwich and hundreds more. Ceadda's own name is British rather than English and its meaning is not recovered.
