Ceasar transposes the two vowels that English has never known what to do with. Latin wrote ae as a single sound and English inherited the letters without the sound, so the pair has been getting swapped, simplified and dropped ever since — and this is the commonest way it goes wrong.

Where it comes from

The story of Ceasar

The letters are the problem. In Latin, ae was a diphthong, a single gliding vowel, and it was written as one thing and heard as one thing. Late Latin flattened it to a plain e, medieval scribes often wrote it as a single letter, and English — which acquired the spelling long after the sound had gone — has no reason to keep the two letters in any particular order. So English writes aesthetic and esthetic, encyclopedia and encyclopedia, and a great many people write Ceasar, because nothing in the way the word is said tells you which vowel comes first. The spelling has been in the American record from the very early years of the count.

Not established

The Romans themselves did not know. Several explanations circulated in antiquity and none of them can be checked; the honest position is that the most famous family name in European history has no established meaning.

Ceasar sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2000, with 67 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Ceasar sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly at sight by everyone who has met the standard spelling.
  • The name is recognized across every European language, with a form in each.
  • It is short, strong and carries two thousand years of continuous use.
What to consider
  • Caesar and Cesar are the standard spellings and both will be written instead.
  • The name is heavy with association, and a child will hear about all of them.
  • Its meaning is genuinely unknown, so any dictionary that gives one confidently is guessing.
