Cayde
Masculine · “Through the surname Cade”
One syllable, ending in the long -ade that English keeps in trade, shade and glade. Cayde is a respelling of Cade, an English surname carried since the Middle Ages, redrawn with a y the way American parents have redrawn names for generations. It is recent enough that its whole story fits inside living memory, and rare enough that most Caydes will not meet another.

The story of Cayde
Cade began as an English surname, recorded in medieval England and best known through Jack Cade, who led the Kentish rising against Henry VI in 1450 and reappears as a character in Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 2. Its life as a first name is American and much newer, part of the long habit of moving surnames to the front. Cayde is one of several respellings — Kade, Caide, Kayde — that traveled with it. The exact Cayde spelling reached a wide audience in the mid-2010s through Cayde-6, a gunslinger in Bungie's Destiny games, and the name's rise on American records has run through those same years.

Through the surname Cade — either a cask or barrel, or an Old English byname of unclear sense
Surname scholars offer two roads. One takes Cade from Middle English cade, a cask or barrel, used as a nickname or an occupational tag. The other takes it from the Old English personal byname Cada, whose own sense was already lost by the time it was written down. The y-spelling is modern and adds no separate meaning of its own.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Ardis test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cayde's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ardis climbed just as high around 1903, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ardis's path sketches the road Cayde is walking now.
Cayde sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Cayde is headed
Cayde should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- One syllable, said the same way by everyone on first sight; nobody hesitates over how to pronounce it.
- Sits inside a sound family Americans already know well — Cade, Kade, Wade, Jade — so it registers as a name immediately.
- Rare enough in classrooms that a Cayde is unlikely to share it, while never sounding invented on the spot.
- Short enough to fit any surname and any form field, with no clipping needed.
- The default spelling of this sound is Cade. Expect a lifetime of spelling it out over the phone and correcting forms — a small, permanent tax rather than a real problem.
- The name's whole run on American records is recent, so it reads as distinctly of this era. That can be a pleasure or a date stamp, depending on how you feel about names that place a person in time.
- The Destiny character shares the exact spelling. Among gamers that connection is instant; outside that audience it means nothing, and video-game recognition tends to fade faster than the name will.
