A Polish cavalry officer is why this name is in American records at all. He had already been condemned to death at home for a failed rising, came over to fight for the revolution, reorganised a cavalry that barely existed, and was killed at Savannah at thirty-four — and one state still closes its schools for him.

Where it comes from

The story of Casimer

A king of the name is remembered in a single sentence that Poles still quote. He inherited a country that had been fought over and impoverished, spent his reign codifying the laws, founding a university, admitting Jewish refugees expelled from elsewhere in Europe, and building — and the proverb says he found Poland made of wood and left it made of brick. He is the only Polish monarch given the epithet the Great. He also had no legitimate son, which meant the dynasty ended with him and the throne passed by marriage to Lithuania.

Meaningscholars disagree

he who commands peace

Two Slavic elements, the second meaning peace. The first is argued over: destroy and command have both been proposed, which produces two nearly opposite readings of the same compound.

Casimer sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 135 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Casimer sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Kaz works as a short form and sounds entirely current.
  • It carries a specific and identifiable history rather than a vague one.
  • It is genuinely rare while containing no difficult sound.
What to consider
  • Casimir is the standard spelling and this one gets corrected.
  • The meaning is genuinely contested between two opposite readings.
  • The generation that used it in America is now very old.
