Where it comes from

Our story of Carvel

Our story of Carvel sets sail. In the fifteenth century the caravel was the ship that made the long Atlantic voyages possible, small and fast and able to sail close to the wind, and two of the three ships Columbus took west in 1492 were caravels, the Niña and the Pinta. English sailors wrote the word carvel. As a surname, Carvel later reached a governor's office in Delaware and the signs of a chain of ice-cream stores. As an American first name it belongs to a handful of families, two clean syllables with the sea somewhere behind them.

Not established

No record explains Carvel as a first name. It is spelled like carvel, the older English form of caravel, and it is also a surname, carried by a governor of Delaware and by the founder of an ice-cream chain. The record does not say which road led to the first name.

Fashion outlook

Carvel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Spelled like a real English word with a seafaring history, the older form of caravel.
  • Two syllables, easy to say, with one natural pronunciation.
  • Close to Carl and Carvell in sound, so it is easy to pick up.
What to consider
  • In the Northeast especially, Carvel is the name of an ice-cream chain, and the ice-cream-cake jokes will come; they are affectionate ones.
  • People will hear Carvell, Carville or Carl and write those, so the spelling will need giving.
