The story of Carmello
Mount Carmel is where the book of Kings sets the contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal, and where a community of hermits settled in the twelfth century and became the Carmelite order. The order's devotion to Mary under the title of Mount Carmel spread the name across Catholic Europe, and Italian and Spanish families have used Carmelo for sons and Carmela or Carmen for daughters ever since. It reached the United States with Italian emigration, and the doubled-l spelling is an American addition.
Meaning
vineyard, orchard — the garden land
Hebrew karmel means a garden land, an orchard or a vineyard — fertile planted ground as opposed to wilderness. Mount Carmel is named for being exactly that. The reading is documented. Carmelo is the Italian and Spanish given name taken from the Marian title Our Lady of Mount Carmel; Carmello with the doubled l is an American respelling.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
