Carie
Feminine · “free man”
The Carolinas were named for a king called Charles — Charles the First when the charter was first granted, Charles the Second when it was regranted — using the Latin form of his name, Carolus. Caroline, Carol, Carrie and Carie all descend from the same Germanic word, and it did not mean royal at all.

The story of Carie
Caroline came into English use in the eighteenth century with a queen — Caroline of Brandenburg-Ansbach, wife of George the Second, who was considerably cleverer than her husband and ran the country during his absences. The name became fashionable on her account, produced Carrie as a short form, and Carrie then became a certificate name in nineteenth-century America. Carie is that with a single r, which English spelling rules say should lengthen the vowel and which, here, does not.
Meaning
free man
Germanic karl meant a free man of the lower rank — not a noble, and specifically not a king. Charlemagne's fame turned the word into a title in several Slavic languages, where the word for king still descends from his name, which is a rare case of a person's name becoming a common noun across a language family. Caroline is the Latin feminine, Carrie the English short form, and Carie a spelling of that with one r.

Pronouncing Carie
KAIR-ee
KAIR-ee, two syllables, stress at the front. English normally reads a single consonant after a vowel as a signal to lengthen it — compare caring and carry — so this spelling asks a reader to break a rule, and most of them manage it.

Fashion outlook
Carie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Caroline is available as a formal long form with a documented royal history.
- The Germanic origin is settled and the meaning is concrete.
- Two syllables, easy in any accent, and comfortable against most surnames.
- Carrie and Cari are both in wider use and the spelling is dictated every time.
- The single r invites a lengthened first vowel, which is not how the name is said.
- It is closely tied to one American generation and dates a person fairly precisely.
