Where it comes from

The story of Capitola

E.D.E.N. Southworth serialized The Hidden Hand in the New York Ledger, and its heroine, Capitola Black, known as Cap, was a girl raised in poverty who disguised herself as a boy, talked back to villains and rescued other people. The story was reprinted again and again and staged across the country. Families named daughters for her, and on the California coast a seaside camp was named Capitola after the same heroine and grew into a town that still carries the name.

Meaning

a coinage by E.D.E.N. Southworth, on capital or capitol

Capitola was made up by the novelist E.D.E.N. Southworth for the heroine of The Hidden Hand. It echoes capital and capitol, from Latin caput, head, but it was never a word in its own right.

Capitola sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1915, with 34 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Capitola sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a documented literary origin and a heroine who was admired for her courage.
  • Cap is a lively, ready short form.
  • It is almost never given now, so it is entirely distinctive.
What to consider
  • Most people will think of the California beach town or of the Capitol building before the novel.
  • It is long and unfamiliar, so it will need spelling and explaining.
