The story of Candise
Kush ruled Egypt outright for the better part of a century, as its twenty-fifth dynasty, before being pushed back south; afterwards it went on for a thousand years at Meroe with its own script, its own gods and a series of ruling queens. The pyramids are the burials of those rulers, clustered in fields in what is now Sudan, and most of them were blown open in the eighteen-thirties by an Italian treasure hunter who took the tops off dozens of them looking for gold. The site is a world heritage site now and gets a fraction of the visitors that Giza does. A title from that kingdom became an ordinary American woman's name by way of a mistake in a Greek text.
Meaning
Queen mother
The word was a title rather than a name: the kandake was the queen or queen mother of Kush, an office with real power, and Greek and Roman writers who met one assumed it was her personal name. English inherited the mistake. The final syllable in this spelling is written the way English writes a verb ending.
How the name formed
- kandake
- Candace
- Candise
Pronouncing Candise
kan-DEESE
Two syllables with the stress at the back in this spelling. The standard Candace has three with the weight at the front, so the respelling changes the shape of the name rather than just its letters.

Fashion outlook
Candise sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Final stress gives the name a definite finish and makes it carry when called.
- The history behind it is real, substantial and almost entirely unknown.
- Every sound in it is ordinary English.
- Candace is the standard spelling and is said differently, so both the letters and the rhythm will be corrected.
- The ending spells the way English writes verbs like advise and revise.
- Candy is the short form most likely to attach itself, and it carries a lot with it.
