Canaan
Masculine · Hebrew roots · “Likely "lowland”
Canaan is given to both — 5,843 boys and 324 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Canaan is one of the oldest place names still in use anywhere: the land west of the Jordan, named in Egyptian and Mesopotamian documents of the second millennium BC long before the Hebrew Bible gave it its lasting fame. In English it arrived through scripture rather than through families, which is why it still sounds like a word and a name at the same time. Two syllables, open vowels, and an ending that sits comfortably beside Ethan and Nathan.

The story of Canaan
The name is attested in Bronze Age Egyptian and Akkadian records for the coastal region and its people, and it entered the Hebrew Bible as both a land and a person: Canaan, son of Ham, in the genealogy of Genesis. Greek translators of the Hebrew scriptures wrote it Chanaan, and the Latin Bible kept that form, from which English took Canaan. For most of its history in English it stayed a geography — the Promised Land of sermons, spirituals and hymns, where "crossing over into Canaan" meant arrival and rest. Its use as a given name for American boys is a recent development, part of the same movement that lifted Zion, Eden and Jericho off the map and onto birth certificates.

Likely "lowland" — or a trade word for purple dye
One reading ties Hebrew Kena'an to a Semitic root for being low or lowered, giving "lowland" and standing in contrast to Aram, "highland." The other links it to Akkadian kinaḫḫu, the purple-red wool dye traded along that coast — the same idea behind the Greek name Phoinike, Phoenicia. Both are taken seriously by scholars, and neither has won.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Canaan went to 212 boys in 2025, but Kanan, Kanaan and Kannan and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 489, which makes it the 515th most-given boys’ name of the year — 529 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 3,493 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 8,057 for Canaan itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jamil test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Canaan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jamil climbed just as high around 1978, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jamil's path sketches the road Canaan is walking now.
Canaan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Canaan is headed
Canaan should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- A spelling almost everyone has already seen in print, even if they have never met a person carrying it — no need to spell it out letter by letter.
- Two syllables with a familiar -an ending, so it sits naturally beside Ethan, Nathan and Logan on a class list.
- Recognized across languages as Kanʿān in Arabic, Chanaan in Greek and Canaan in French and Spanish.
- A written record stretching back to Bronze Age diplomatic correspondence — few names can be traced that far.
- Its wave is very recent, so a boy given it now is unlikely to share it with anyone in his grade.
- In Genesis, Canaan is the grandson cursed by Noah, and that passage was cited for centuries to defend slavery. Most people will simply hear the Promised Land, but the other reading exists and is worth knowing before you choose.
- Said quickly or misread, it can come out close to "cannon" or "canon," and it gets confused in speech with Keenan and Kanan. Expect to correct spelling to Canaan now and then.
- There is no established short form, so he will mostly go by the full name — fine for some families, less so if you like having a nickname ready.
- It is still heard by many as a place rather than a person, which fades fast once people meet a Canaan but can prompt a comment early on.
