Camaron can be read two ways and the record does not choose: it is either a Scottish surname respelled with an a, or an ordinary Spanish noun. The noun means a shrimp, and it happens to be the nickname of the man who changed flamenco singing more than anyone in the last century.

Our story of Camaron
José Monje Cruz was called the shrimp by an uncle because he was small and fair, and the nickname stuck to him for life and onto every record he made. He came out of a Romani family in a shipbuilding town in Cádiz province, sang in the street and in bars from childhood, and by his twenties was the most talked-about voice in flamenco. What made him divisive was not the voice but the company: he recorded with a guitarist who brought in Brazilian percussion and a producer who added electric bass and a sitar, and traditionalists said he had ruined the form. The record they hated is now the one most often named as the point flamenco turned modern. He died at forty-one, and something like a hundred thousand people went to the funeral.

Two readings compete. As a respelling of the Scottish surname it inherits that name's meaning, which describes a crooked feature. As the Spanish word it means a shrimp and was never intended as a given name. Nothing in the record separates families who meant one from families who meant the other.

Fashion outlook
Camaron sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Cam comes off it at once and needs no explanation to anyone.
- It reads naturally in both English and Spanish, which few names manage.
- Three syllables with front stress is a comfortable English rhythm.
- Cameron is far commoner and will be written for it by default.
- Spanish speakers will hear an ordinary word for a shellfish.
- The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
