Where it comes from

The story of Cache

French-speaking trappers and traders working the western rivers buried their goods for the season and called the place a cache, and the word entered American English with them — Cache Valley in Utah and Cache la Poudre in Colorado both record the practice. The computing sense came much later and by a separate borrowing. Its use as a given name is recent and American, and it belongs with the word-names of the last two decades.

Meaning

a hiding place, a store

From French cacher, to hide; fur traders in North America used the word for a buried store of supplies, and it entered American English that way long before computers borrowed it again.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable and five letters, easy to write and impossible to mispronounce.
  • A settled meaning with a genuinely interesting North American history behind it.
  • It has a good concrete image — something valuable stored away.
What to consider
  • It sounds exactly like cash and will be spelled that way constantly.
  • The computing sense is the first association for a great many people.
  • A one-syllable word-name gives little room for a nickname.
