The story of Byrd
William Byrd was organist to a Protestant queen, held a monopoly on printing music in England with his former teacher, and remained an openly practicing Catholic through decades in which that was punishable by ruinous fines and worse. He paid the fines. His wife was repeatedly cited as a recusant. And alongside the English anthems he wrote for the official church, he produced three settings of the Latin Mass — printed without a title page, in small formats, clearly intended for use in private houses where the service was being held illegally — and a collection of Latin motets whose texts are almost all about exile, captivity and waiting for deliverance, which contemporary Catholics understood perfectly well. The queen protected him, probably because the music was too good to lose. The masses were not performed publicly in England for nearly three hundred years.
Meaning
bird
The surname is the ordinary English word, used as a nickname for someone small, quick or given to singing, in the way that a great many medieval English surnames were. The y is not a variant vowel: it is how the word was regularly written before the spelling settled.

Fashion outlook
Byrd sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
