The story of Butch
The word turns up in American speech in the nineteenth century meaning a butcher or a butcher's assistant, and by the early twentieth it had become a general nickname for a boy — sturdy, short-haired, not delicate. From there it attached itself to a haircut, the butch crop, and then, from the middle of the century, to a way of presenting oneself, first inside lesbian communities and later far more widely. That last sense is now the commonest one in most of the English-speaking world. The name on birth certificates belongs to the earlier stretch, and it stopped being given at roughly the point the newer meaning became general.
Meaningscholars disagree
butcher, or a tough boy
The most likely source is a shortening of butcher, applied first to boys who worked in the trade and then to any boy thought sturdy. Some derive it instead from a childish rendering of brother. The record does not settle it.

Fashion outlook
Butch sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Everyone can spell it and say it on first hearing.
- One syllable and five letters, which sits well in front of almost any surname.
- It is entirely unpretentious, which was the whole point of it.
- The word's modern meaning is now the dominant one and arrives before the name does.
- It reads unmistakably as a nickname, and formal settings will look for something longer.
- It belongs firmly to the middle of the twentieth century.
