Where it comes from

Our story of Buren

Martin Van Buren was born in a Dutch-speaking village in the Hudson valley after independence, which makes him the first president who had never been a British subject, and Dutch was the language of his childhood home. He is the only president to date for whom English was a second language. He was also a professional politician in a way none of his predecessors had been, built the first real party machine, and lost the presidency after one term to a campaign that painted him as an effete aristocrat, which was the exact opposite of the truth. His autobiography runs to eight hundred pages and never mentions his wife.

Buren sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 35 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Buren sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at first sight and rarely needs spelling twice.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
  • It carries a documented American history a child can go and read about.
What to consider
  • It reads as half a surname to anybody who knows the full one.
  • It will be heard as Byron or Buran by people catching it once.
  • No origin is documented for the first name, so the meaning question has nothing settled behind it.
