Bunnie is an affectionate word that got onto birth certificates, which happens more often than people think. The animal behind it has one of the stranger vocabulary histories in English: the word everyone used for it was abandoned, deliberately, because of what it sounded like.

Bunnie first appears in US birth records in 1910 — 115 years ago. The typical Bunnie alive today was born around 1952, making them about 73 years old. About 500 people named Bunnie are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Bunnie most popular?

Where it comes from

Our story of Bunnie

For most of English history the animal was a coney, said to rhyme with money, and the word rabbit meant only its young. Coney is all over the King James Bible, all over medieval cookbooks, and still on the map in Coney Island. Then, during the nineteenth century, it began to disappear from polite speech, because it had come to sound too much like a coarse word, and rather than say it people reached for rabbit and promoted the young animal's name to cover the whole species. Bible readers quietly shifted the pronunciation to rhyme with bony so they could keep reading the verses aloud. Bunny arrived in the middle of all this, a nursery word built on bun, a Scots term for a small tail. The adult word was retired and the baby word took over, which is the whole story of this name in miniature.

Bunnie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1953, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Bunnie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm and immediately understood, which very few names manage on first hearing.
  • Two syllables, six letters, and nobody has ever mispronounced it.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it does not force a reading on anyone.
What to consider
  • It reads as a nickname to most people, so formal settings will keep asking what it is short for.
  • The animal association is total and will follow the name everywhere.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
