Buddie
Masculine · “friend”
Buddie is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,496 boys against 5 girls since 1880.
Buddie is the ordinary English word for a friend, given as a name, and the word itself has two competing origins and no settled one. It may come from baby talk for brother, which is the account most dictionaries prefer, or from a British mining term for a work partner, which is documented earlier and has never quite been ruled out.

The story of Buddie
A butty, in the coal and iron districts of Britain, was a partner: two men working a seam together and sharing what they took out, or a middleman who contracted for a stretch of workings and hired the labor himself. The word is well attested from the eighteenth century, is still current in south Wales as a word for a friend, and looks very like the ancestor of the American term. The competing account has the American word arising independently from small children saying brother badly, which is how a great many affectionate words arise and is impossible to document because nobody writes down what toddlers say. The two explanations have been argued over for a century and the honest position is that the word may have two parents.

friend
The modern sense is not in doubt: a friend, a companion, and in American usage a form of address to a stranger. The origin is. The brother account is the majority view and rests on the ordinary process by which children mangle words; the mining account rests on an attested older word for a workmate. Both are plausible and neither is demonstrated.

Fashion outlook
Buddie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Nobody will mispronounce it or need it spelled twice.
- It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
- It is warm in a way that formal names have to work at.
- The word is a form of address to strangers, which makes the name oddly transparent.
- It reads as a nickname, and people will assume a longer name behind it.
- It is very firmly of the turn of the twentieth century.
