Where it comes from
From A Middle High German word about brownness to Bryna
The story of Bryna
The production company was named for a woman who had arrived from the Russian empire as an illiterate immigrant and raised seven children in poverty in upstate New York. Her son used it for a decade of films, and in nineteen sixty he put the name of a writer who had been blacklisted for a decade on the credits of one of them, in defiance of an arrangement under which such writers worked anonymously for a fraction of their fee. Another producer did the same thing the same year for a different film. Between them the two credits made the arrangement impossible to sustain. The company kept the name for as long as it existed, which means an immigrant woman's Yiddish name is on the front of a considerable amount of American film history.

brown
The Yiddish name is usually derived from a Middle High German word about brownness, applied as a descriptive name and then inherited in the ordinary way. That derivation is standard and not certain; Yiddish names frequently have more than one line of descent, and a connection to a Hebrew word about blessing has also been proposed.
How the name formed
- A Middle High German word about brownness
- A Yiddish name carried across eastern Europe
- Brought to America by immigrant families
- Bryna as an English spelling of it

Two syllables, stress on the first, with a long i sound written as a y. Yiddish transliteration usually writes that vowel as ei rather than as y, so this spelling is an English adaptation rather than a standard transcription.

Fashion outlook
Bryna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, distinctive and easy to say once the first vowel is established.
- It has a genuine community history rather than an invented one.
- Bree and Nina are two very different short forms and both stand alone.
- The y will be read as a short i by people meeting it cold.
- It will be written Brina, Breina or Brenna by anybody taking it from speech.
- It is rare enough that it will need spelling out most of the time.
