Our story of Brooksie
On the night of his assassination in 1865, Abraham Lincoln wore a Brooks Brothers coat whose lining was embroidered with an eagle and the words 'One Country, One Destiny'. In 1950 Gwendolyn Brooks of Chicago won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry for Annie Allen, the first Black writer to win a Pulitzer in any category. Brooksie takes their surname and makes it a pet name, the affectionate -ie turning a stream into something small and dear.
