The story of Bronte
The father was born in Ireland with a plain surname, spelled Brunty or Prunty in the records. He went to Cambridge, took orders, and somewhere in that passage changed the way he wrote his name — to Brontë, with a mark over the e that is not Greek, not Irish and not English, and that appears to have been his own idea. One likely reason sits on a map: Nelson had recently been made Duke of Bronte, a town in Sicily granted to him by a grateful king, and the title was in every newspaper. A curate admiring Nelson, adopting a Greek word for thunder as a family name, produced the surname under which his three daughters published — a name that now means novels rather than weather.
Meaning
Thunder
The Greek word is thunder, and it names one of the Cyclopes in Hesiod as well as a town on the slopes of Etna. The surname reached that word by a deliberate act rather than by descent, which is unusual enough to be the whole story of the name.

Pronouncing Bronte
BRON-tee
Two syllables, stress at the front. The mark the family used over the final e was there to stop people saying BRONT, and it works in the same way for the American spelling without it.

Fashion outlook
Bronte sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It carries a literary association that is universally recognized and entirely positive.
- The meaning is vivid and settled, which surname names rarely offer.
- It works for either child without reading as borrowed from the other.
- It is a surname belonging to specific people, and some readers will hear it as a tribute rather than a name.
- The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
- Bronty, Brontae and Bronte are all possible from the sound.
