A brogue is a shoe, and the word is Irish. Bróg meant a rough hide shoe of the kind worn in the west of Ireland and the Highlands, and English borrowed it twice — once for the footwear, which became a respectable town shoe with punched holes in it, and once, by a road that is argued about, for an Irish accent. Brogan is the surname built on the same word.

The story of Brogan
Ó Brógáin is a Connacht and Munster surname, and a seventh-century scribe called Brogan is remembered as Saint Patrick's amanuensis. The surname reached America with Irish emigration and moved to the front of the name in the twentieth century, arriving relatively late — it appears in the record from 1983 and rose through the 2000s, given mostly to sons and to a real minority of daughters. It belongs to the wave of Irish surnames that American naming has been working through for forty years.

descendant of the little shoe-maker
From the Irish bróg, a shoe, with a diminutive ending — so a personal name that probably began as a nickname about footwear or about making it. The shoe is certain. The English word brogue for an accent is usually connected to the same source, on the idea of the speech of people who wore such shoes, though some scholars derive it from a different Irish word about an impediment in speech.

The Allyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Brogan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Allyn climbed just as high around 1942, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Allyn's path sketches the road Brogan is walking now.
Brogan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a genuine Irish surname with a documented and concrete meaning.
- It is entirely readable on sight, which many Irish names are not.
- It works for a child of either sex, and the record shows it doing so.
- The shoe-and-accent history is a good story in one sentence.
- Bro, the obvious clipping, has acquired a meaning in American slang that a boy will meet.
- It reads as a surname first, so introductions carry a small pause.
- Most children given this spelling are boys, but a real minority are girls, so rosters will guess.
