Where it comes from

Our story of Brockton

Brockton, Massachusetts made shoes. At its height there were dozens of factories in the city, it was one of the largest shoe-producing centers in the world, and it supplied a very large share of the boots worn by the Union army. That concentration produced a strong labor movement, a series of long strikes, and a city that was among the first in the country to be lit by a central electric station, built by Edison himself, because a shoe factory running at night needed light. The industry moved south and then overseas within a couple of generations, the way concentrated industries do. The city is still there and the factories are not.

The ending is the ordinary English one for a farmstead, and the first element is a word for a badger. Whether an American Brockton is named for the Massachusetts city, for an English village, or was built from the sounds is not recorded.

Fashion outlook

Brockton sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at first sight and never needs spelling out loud.
  • Brock comes off the front as a short form and is established in its own right.
  • It sits in the large family of -ton place names Americans are used to seeing in front position.
What to consider
  • It reads as a place name or a surname to most listeners, which suits some families and not others.
  • In New England the city association is immediate and specific.
  • No origin is documented for the first name, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
