The story of Britton
When Anglo-Saxon settlement pushed the Celtic Britons west, some of them crossed the Channel and settled the peninsula that took their name: Brittany, little Britain. Their descendants came back with William's army, and English neighbors identified them by where they had come from — le Bretun, the Breton — which became the surname Britton, Brittain and Bretton. It reached America early and became a first name there in the twentieth century, riding the general move of English surnames to the front of the name.
Meaning
a Breton; a Briton
From Old French Bretun, the word for an inhabitant of Brittany, itself from the Latin Britto, a Briton. The surname was given to Bretons living in England after the Conquest — many came over with the Normans — and it is the same word behind Britain, Breton and Brittany. The reading is documented and not disputed.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Britton went to 46 boys in 2025, but Bryton and Briton are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 80, which makes it the 848th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,917 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 21,351 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 37,132 for Britton itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Britton's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Garvin climbed just as high around 1902, and its whole arc is on record.
