Brittany is named for refugees. When Anglo-Saxon settlement pushed Britons out of what is now England, a great many crossed to the north-west corner of Gaul and settled there, and the region took their name — Brittany is little Britain, and the Breton language is a cousin of Welsh rather than of French.

The story of Brittni
The migration is real history rather than legend: Breton is a Brittonic language, closer to Cornish and Welsh than to anything else, and its presence in France is evidence of a population that moved. Brittany became an American girl's name in the later twentieth century and spread very fast, taking a large number of spellings with it — Brittany, Brittney, Britany, Britni, Brittni. The bare i ending cuts two letters off the standard spelling and belongs to the same American convention that produced Jodi and Lori a generation earlier.
Meaning
from Brittany
Latin Britannia named the island; Britannia Minor named the peninsula the Britons settled in the fifth and sixth centuries, and French wore that down to Bretagne. English calls it Brittany. The name means a person from there, in the ordinary way of place names used as personal ones. What Britannia itself meant is older and less certain, connected to a word the Greeks recorded for the islands' inhabitants.

Fashion outlook
Brittni sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It names a real region with a genuinely interesting history of migration behind it.
- Britt is a ready short form and a standing name elsewhere in Europe.
- The bare i settles the syllable count that the standard spelling leaves open.
- There are at least six spellings of this name in American use and none is standard, so it is dictated every time.
- It is closely tied to one American generation and dates a person about as precisely as a name can.
- It is recorded for boys as well, though rarely, so on a form it will occasionally be guessed wrong.
