Brittnay respells a name taken from a French region, and the English spelling of that region was already a modification. French writes Bretagne with one t; English doubled it, added a y, and produced a form the French would not recognize on paper. The region's name is also the reason Great Britain is called great, which is a fact that surprises almost everybody who hears it.

Where it comes from

The story of Brittnay

In the early Middle Ages there were two Britains, and Latin writers had to tell them apart. The island was Britannia Maior, the greater Britain, and the peninsula in Gaul settled by refugees and migrants from it was Britannia Minor, the lesser. Great Britain therefore carries a comparison in its name, and the thing it is being compared to is Brittany. Almost nobody in the English-speaking world knows this, and the greatness is generally taken to be self-congratulation rather than geography. The peninsula kept its language, which is still spoken and is the only Celtic language on the continent, and kept a distinct legal and political identity long after the rest of France was consolidated. The name reached American girls in the nineteen eighties, arrived very fast, and generated more spellings on the way up than almost any other name of its decade.

Meaning

from Brittany

The region takes its name from British settlers who crossed the Channel in the centuries after Rome withdrew, and the name means their land rather than describing anything about it. As a personal name it is a place name used directly, which carries no meaning in the ordinary sense: it identifies a region and nothing more. The doubled t and the respelled ending are both English and American additions with no bearing on the sense.

How the name formed

  1. British settlers crossing into Gaul after Rome
  2. The lesser Britain, against the greater one
  3. Bretagne in French, Brittany in English
  4. Brittnay and a crowd of other American spellings

Pronouncing Brittnay

BRIT-nee

Two syllables, stress on the first. The -ay ending is one of several ways American spelling writes this final sound, and it changes nothing audible. French says the region's name in a way that has almost nothing in common with the English version.

Fashion outlook

Brittnay sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is universally familiar and will never be mispronounced.
  • Britt and Bree are both strong short forms and neither is tied to the decade the full name is.
  • There is a real place with a real history behind it, and the history is genuinely interesting.
What to consider
  • Brittany is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected into it constantly.
  • The name is very tightly dated to a stretch of the nineteen eighties and nineties.
  • There were more spellings of this name in circulation than of almost any other in its decade.
