The story of Britteny
France has one official language and says so in its constitution, which was amended in nineteen ninety-two specifically to establish the point. Breton, along with Basque, Occitan, Alsatian, Corsican and several others, therefore has no official standing: it cannot be the language of state business, and for most of the twentieth century it was actively discouraged in schools, with children punished for speaking it. Speaker numbers fell from over a million to a small fraction of that within three generations. There is now a network of immersion schools and a revival movement, and the language is taught and used in ways it was not fifty years ago, but it remains the only Celtic language on the continent and it has no legal protection in the country where it is spoken.
Meaning
from Brittany
The region takes its name from British settlers who crossed the Channel after Rome withdrew, and the personal name is the region used directly. The reading is a location rather than a description. The rearranged vowels in this spelling change nothing at all about the sense or the sound; they change only which of a dozen variants a certificate carries.
How the name formed
- British settlers crossing into Gaul after Rome
- Brittany as a region with its own Celtic language
- The place name taken up for American daughters
- A dozen spellings appearing at once

Fashion outlook
Britteny sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
