Where it comes from

The story of Britnie

Brittany was absorbed into France by a marriage and a treaty in the sixteenth century, and the terms mattered. The province kept its own parliament, its own courts and — the part that made it prosperous and difficult — its own tax arrangements, including exemption from the salt tax that crushed much of the rest of the kingdom. The Estates of Brittany went on meeting for over two centuries, negotiating with the crown rather than simply obeying it. All of it ended in 1789, when the Revolution abolished the provinces along with everything else that had been particular to them, and Brittany became departments like everywhere else. The language survived the loss of the institutions, which is usually the other way round, and the region's name was already loose enough by then to travel and become, four centuries later, a name for American daughters.

Meaning

from Brittany

The name is the place, and the place is named for the people who settled it: Britons crossing from the island of Britain to the Armorican peninsula in late antiquity, taking their language with them. So the name means a region, and the region means the people, and the people mean an island the name has come back to. As a girl's name it is entirely modern. This spelling keeps only the sound of the original word, and someone meeting it without knowing the name would have no way to connect it to a map.

How the name formed

  1. Britons cross to the Armorican peninsula and give it their name
  2. Brittany joins France in the sixteenth century, keeping its estates and tax rights
  3. 1789: the Revolution abolishes the province and its privileges
  4. American parents adopt Brittany as a girl's name
  5. The spelling is reduced to Britnie

Fashion outlook

Britnie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, quick to write and entirely phonetic
  • The sound is familiar to everyone, so it never needs to be explained in speech
  • A rare spelling attached to a well-liked and easily said name
What to consider
  • The standard spelling is far commoner, and several other variants compete, so the name will be written many different ways.
  • The reduced spelling severs the visible link to the place, which matters if the place is why it was chosen.
  • The name is closely dated to one American decade and will be heard as belonging to it.
