Britanny points at the western peninsula of France, and the peninsula has given the world more than its share of words and stories. Two of them are worth setting beside the name: a body of twelfth-century poems that carried King Arthur into French, and a pair of words that every archaeologist on earth now uses without knowing they are Breton.

Where it comes from

The story of Britanny

In the twelfth century someone writing in England produced a set of short verse tales, said in their own prologue to be Breton in origin, and signed them only with a line saying that her name was Marie and that she was from France. Nobody has ever identified her with certainty, and the Lais of Marie de France remain among the earliest and best of medieval romances. They are one of the roads by which Arthur and his court passed from Celtic story into French and then into English. Brittany's other quiet export is more physical. The standing stones that cover the peninsula are called menhirs, from the Breton for long stone, and the chambered tombs are dolmens, from the Breton for stone table. Archaeologists in Ireland, Korea and Peru all use those two Breton words, because Brittany got asked first.

Meaning

the land of the Britons

The region is named for the people who settled it, and the reading is not in dispute. This spelling doubles a different consonant from the usual one, which changes nothing in speech.

Britanny sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1990, with 51 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Britanny sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so the name is never mispronounced even when the spelling is new to the reader.
  • A real place with a documented history stands behind it, with a language, a literature and a coastline.
  • Britt comes off the front as a short form and is itself well established.
What to consider
  • The doubled n sits where readers expect a doubled t, so this spelling will be corrected by nearly everyone who writes it down.
  • The name belongs firmly to one stretch of American naming, which places it in time for most listeners.
  • Spelling it aloud will become a reflex, and it is three syllables to spell.
