Where it comes from

Our story of Brissia

In the Iliad, Briseis is the woman Agamemnon takes from Achilles, and the quarrel over her sets the whole poem moving. Medieval poets kept her name and changed her story: the French poet Benoît de Sainte-Maure called his Trojan heroine Briseida, Boccaccio turned her into Criseida, and Chaucer and then Shakespeare made her Criseyde and Cressida. Spanish kept Briseida as a girl's name. Brissia sounds as if it wandered off from that family toward the sea breeze, and kept a little of both.

Not established

No source records the origin of Brissia. It resembles the Spanish word brisa, breeze, and the name Briseida, the Spanish form of Greek Briseis, but no record connects it to either.

Pronouncing Brissia

BREE-see-uh

Spanish-speaking families say it with the stress on the first syllable and a clear s. English readers may say BRISS-ee-uh. The double s keeps the hiss that a single s between vowels often loses in English, as in rose and visit.
