Where it comes from

The story of Briseyda

The Iliad opens with Agamemnon taking Briseis from Achilles, and Achilles' withdrawal from the fighting is the consequence that shapes the poem. She speaks only once and briefly. Medieval romance reworked her into Criseyda and Cressida, and Spanish took Briseida and Briseyda. It is used in Mexico and Central America and reaches American records from there.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Briseyda went to 35 girls in 2025, but Briseida is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 106, which makes it the 854th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,213 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 15,163 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 45,922 for Briseyda itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A figure from the oldest surviving work of European literature stands behind it.
  • Bri is a plain short form shared with familiar names.
  • Every letter is said, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
What to consider
  • The Greek original's own meaning is genuinely unknown.
  • The story behind her is one of captivity, which some will find hard.
  • Briseyda, Briseida and Brisaida are all in use and none is dominant.
