Brinda
Feminine · “holy basil”
Brinda is a plant. In Sanskrit the word names tulsi, the holy basil that grows in courtyards across India and is tended as a sacred thing, and it belongs to a figure whose devotion is said to have become the plant itself. The b at the front is a regional matter: Bengali and several southern languages write with a b what Sanskrit wrote with a v.

The story of Brinda
Tulsi is grown at the threshold of a great many Indian homes and is watered and greeted daily; it is one of the few plants treated as a person in a living tradition. The name Vrinda belongs to that world, and it traveled with Indian families wherever they went. The b-spelling is not a corruption but a straightforward regional pronunciation — Bengali, Assamese and several southern languages merge the two sounds or prefer the b. In American records the name has two quite different populations behind it, which is worth knowing before deciding what it means.
Meaningscholars disagree
holy basil; the tulsi plant
The Sanskrit Vrinda names the tulsi plant and, in the stories attached to it, a woman transformed into it. The town of Vrindavan, associated with Krishna, carries the same word. There is a second and quite separate possibility for American families: Brinda appears in US records alongside Brenda and Belinda in the same decades, and some of it is almost certainly a variation on those rather than the Sanskrit name.

The Venice test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Brinda's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Venice climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Venice's path sketches the road Brinda is walking now.
Brinda sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Six letters, two syllables, and nothing an English reader has to be taught.
- The Sanskrit word behind it names a living tradition rather than an abstraction.
- Brin works as a short form and is entirely usable in English.
- It reads as familiar to American ears while being genuinely uncommon.
- Brenda and Belinda sit close enough that the name will be misheard as both.
- The Sanskrit meaning belongs to some families carrying this name and not to others, so it cannot be stated flatly.
- Brindha and Vrinda are both used, and relatives may write it differently.
