Where it comes from

The story of Bridgit

Birgitta of Sweden had eight children, went on pilgrimage after her husband died, moved to Rome and stayed for the rest of her life pressing the popes to come back from Avignon, founded an order that still exists, and left a book of revelations that was read across Europe. She was canonized within twenty years of her death and named a patron of Europe six hundred years later. The Irish name went a different way in America: it was so common among Irish immigrant women in the nineteenth century that Bridget became a generic label for a domestic servant in American newspapers and cartoons, used the way a stock name is used, and the association was strong enough to keep the name out of fashion for a century afterwards.

Meaning

The exalted one

The Old Irish is generally read as high or exalted, and it was a title as much as a name. The Swedish Birgitta is the same name borrowed north; the two saints are separated by eight centuries and by everything else. The spelling here is an English simplification of a name that Irish spells with a dh in the middle and does not say.

Pronouncing Bridgit

BRIJ-it

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The Irish spelling has a dh in the middle that is not pronounced at all, and this version simply leaves it out, which makes it the more phonetic of the two without being the traditional one.

Fashion outlook

Bridgit sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Recognizable across Irish, Swedish, German, French and Italian with only small changes.
  • Several short forms from different countries, which gives a child real choice.
  • The spelling matches the English pronunciation more closely than the standard one does.
What to consider
  • Bridget is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected by people acting in good faith.
  • One of the traditional short forms became an insult in English and should be avoided knowingly.
  • The name carries a strong nineteenth-century American association that has faded but not gone.
