The story of Bricen
Aethelred ordered the killing on the feast of St Brice, according to a charter issued two years later in which he explains himself, saying the Danes in England were to be destroyed like weeds among wheat. What happened in practice is unclear and probably varied by place; excavation in Oxford has found a mass grave of young men of Scandinavian origin from about that date. Among those said to have died was a sister of Sweyn Forkbeard, and Sweyn invaded the following year, campaigned repeatedly, and by 1013 had driven Aethelred out; his son Cnut ruled England from 1016. The saint whose day it was had nothing to do with any of it: Brice of Tours was a difficult but ordinary fifth-century bishop, and his name's meaning is unknown.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Bricen went to 6 boys in 2025, but Brycen and Brysen are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 345, which makes it the 606th most-given boys’ name of the year — 10,089 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 4,951 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 284,679 for Bricen itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
