Briauna
Feminine
Briauna carries a u that nothing pronounces and nothing explains. The name it belongs to has no u in any of its forms, in English or in Irish; the letter has been inserted between two vowels that were already doing the work, and it is one of the few respellings that adds a letter with no precedent at all.

Our story of Briauna
The surname built on the name has traveled further than the name itself. It began as the descendants of one eleventh-century king, became one of the great Irish families, survived the collapse of the Gaelic order, and went out with the emigrations to America, Australia and Argentina, so that it is now among the commonest Irish surnames anywhere in the world. For a long stretch of history the first name was barely used at all while the surname was everywhere: the family had made the name into a possession and other families left it alone. When it came back into general use as a first name in the twentieth century it came back through the surname, which is the reverse of the usual direction of travel.

Not established
The Irish man's name behind this one has no agreed meaning, and the feminine built from it in English inherits that blank. Adding a letter to a name whose source is unexplained does not improve matters. The readings printed in name books are guesses about the parent, applied to a spelling three steps away from it.

- An Irish man's name of disputed meaning
- A surname built on it that outlasted the kingdom

Pronouncing Briauna
bree-AH-nuh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The u is entirely silent and does nothing to the vowels around it, which makes it unusual: most inserted letters in respellings at least change how the name looks to a reader.

Fashion outlook
Briauna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

- The silent u will be dropped by everybody who writes it from speech.
- No meaning can be given, because the parent name has none.
