The story of Brian
Brian Boru fought his way from a minor kingdom in Munster to the high kingship of Ireland and confronted a Norse-Irish alliance at Clontarf in ten fourteen. His side won and he did not survive it, and the story of the old king praying in his tent when he was cut down became one of the founding narratives of Irish identity. The name stayed Irish for nine hundred years and then crossed into general English-speaking use in the twentieth century, becoming one of the most-given men's names in America by the nineteen-seventies.
