It began as a burning and a piece of burning wood, which survives in firebrand and in the brand that is snatched from the burning; it was used by poets for a sword, on the strength of the way a blade catches the light; it produced the verb to brand, for burning a mark into an animal or a person, which is where the modern commercial sense comes from by way of a maker's mark; and it gave the word brandish. The drink is a separate borrowing from Dutch, and the modern name comes from the drink. So a family choosing this name has probably chosen a spirit rather than a sword, and the two words are cousins at a considerable distance.
