The story of Branch
Branca meant an animal's paw in Late Latin, and French extended it to a tree limb, presumably by the resemblance. English took the word in the thirteenth century with both senses of a limb and an offshoot. Branch became an English surname for someone living by a fork in a road or a river, and it was in real American given-name use in the nineteenth century, particularly in the South.
Meaning
a limb of a tree; an offshoot
From Late Latin branca, a paw or claw, through Old French branche; the sense of a tree limb came first in French and the figurative uses followed quickly in both languages.

The trade-off
- An ordinary English word, so nobody has to be taught to say or spell it.
- Genuine nineteenth-century American use, so it is a revival rather than an invention.
- Bran is a short form with real Welsh and Irish history.
- The word has a great many everyday uses, and jokes about banks and trees will follow.
- It reads as a surname to people meeting it in front of another one.
- A one-syllable word-name gives little room for a nickname.
Nobody names a baby alone.
