Our story of Bradey
A New York portrait photographer with failing eyesight decided at the outbreak of the Civil War to photograph the whole of it, hired a team of operators, bought wagons and equipment on credit, and sent them out with the armies. The result was thousands of glass plates — camps, earthworks, pontoon bridges, officers, and the dead at Antietam, which were exhibited in his gallery and shocked a public that had only seen war in engravings. He assumed the government would buy the collection when it was over. It did not, or not for years and not for enough, and the debts took everything: the studios went, the plates were sold off piecemeal, and some were reportedly bought for the glass and scraped clean for greenhouses. He died in a charity ward. The surviving negatives are now among the most reproduced photographs in the country.

Not established
The Irish surname behind it is usually derived from a personal name whose own meaning is not settled; a word for a chest or ribcage is the usual suggestion and it is not secure. This spelling adds a silent letter to that surname and has no separate source of its own.

Fashion outlook
Bradey sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Brad detaches at once and needs no explanation anywhere.
- Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has for a name.
- The sound is completely familiar even where the spelling is not.
- Brady is overwhelmingly the standard spelling and this will be corrected for a lifetime.
- The inserted letter is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
- The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
