Our story of Bonnita
A bonus is straightforward: the Latin adjective for good, taken into English in the early nineteenth century by stockbrokers who wanted a grand word for an extra dividend, and grammatically wrong from the start, since a neuter noun would have been bonum. A boon looks like a relative and is not. It came from Old Norse bón, a prayer or a request, and its original English sense was exactly that — asking a boon meant asking a favor, and the person granting it was the one doing the giving. The modern sense of a benefit arose because the two words looked alike and speakers quietly merged them. So the phrase a boon to mankind is built on a misunderstanding several centuries old, and the older sense survives only in the slightly archaic phrase about begging a boon.

Not established
The Spanish adjective bonita means pretty and the Scots word bonnie means good-looking; they descend from the same Latin adjective by different roads. This spelling takes the doubled n of one and the ending of the other, which neither language does, so it belongs to neither.
Pronouncing Bonnita
boh-NEE-tuh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle, which is where the Spanish ending puts it. The doubled n does not shorten the first vowel here, which it would in an English word.

Fashion outlook
Bonnita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
- Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
- The general sense behind it is plain and needs no explaining.
- Bonita is the standard Spanish spelling and will be written for it.
- The doubled n looks wrong to Spanish readers and the ending looks wrong to Scots ones.
- Nothing records which parent the family had in mind.
Nobody names a baby alone.
