Our story of Blase
Blaise was a bishop in Armenia who was killed in one of the Roman persecutions, and the tradition says he was tortured first with iron combs of the kind used to card wool. Medieval guilds picked their patrons by exactly this sort of grim logic, and the wool combers of England took him: his feast was a trade holiday in the cloth towns, with processions, and in Bradford it was kept into the nineteenth century with a full costumed parade every seven years. Meanwhile the French word blasé, with an accent, came into English in the nineteenth century meaning jaded by overindulgence, and it is not related to the name in any way. Written without the accent, as here, the two collide on the page and nowhere else.

The Latin name Blasius has been connected to a word meaning stammering or lisping, and the derivation is not secure. The saint's own history is thin and much of what is told about him is late.

Fashion outlook
Blase sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- One syllable and five letters: short, strong and quick to write.
- The saint's name is established across Europe, so the name is rare here without being invented.
- It is read correctly by most people once they have heard it once.
- Without its accent it is spelled exactly like an English word meaning world-weary, and people will make the joke.
- Blaise is the commoner spelling, so this version will be corrected to it regularly.
- The name's own meaning is not secure, so the question has no settled answer.
