The story of Blanchie
French blanc is a Germanic loanword. Frankish blank meant shining or gleaming, it was taken into the Latin of northern Gaul, and it eventually pushed out the inherited Latin word for white altogether, so Blanche is a Frankish word wearing French clothes and its nearest relatives are English blank and German blank rather than anything Roman. It became a royal name through Blanche of Castile, who married into the French crown and then governed France twice, once as regent while her son Louis was a boy and again while he was away on crusade. Blanche of Lancaster carried it into England, where Chaucer wrote a poem on her death. American families reached for the -ie form in the eighteen-nineties without thinking about any of that.
Meaning
White
Blanche is the feminine of the French adjective blanc. In medieval use the sense was closer to fair or bright than to the flat modern color, and as a name it worked in contrast to the dark-haired names in the same families. The -ie adds no meaning whatever; it adds familiarity, which in that generation was the point of it.

Fashion outlook
Blanchie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A clear meaning with real history behind it, in a name short enough to be said easily by a small child.
- Both halves are familiar: Blanche is known, and the -ie ending needs no explanation to any English speaker.
- It has close relatives in five European languages, so it travels better than most American pet forms.
- The -ie ending places the name firmly in one generation, and it reads as a great-grandmother's name rather than a child's.
- Blanche itself is strongly associated with one character in one American play, and the association is not a happy one.
- The ch will draw the French pronunciation from anyone who has studied the language, so expect a correction at every introduction.
