The story of Biridiana
Luis Buñuel's Viridiana, about a novice who tries to live out her faith by taking in beggars, won the top prize at Cannes and was promptly banned in Spain, where the government had approved its making. The film's heroine carried the name of a medieval Tuscan saint who lived for decades in a sealed cell. In Mexico and among Mexican American families, the name became a favorite, and because Spanish b and v sound alike, some families wrote it Biridiana.
