Bionca
Feminine · “white”
Bionca changes one vowel in an Italian name, and that one change does something the usual respelling does not: it stops the name being a word. The name it alters is simply the Italian adjective for white, and with the o in place it is no longer Italian for anything.

The story of Bionca
A Venetian girl of good family eloped with a Florentine clerk, was disowned, and ended up in Florence, where the heir to the grand duchy noticed her. She became his mistress while both were married to other people, and when his wife died he married her, over the loud objection of his family and of Venice's enemies. She was crowned grand duchess. Eleven years later the couple fell ill at a villa outside Florence within hours of each other and died a day apart, and the duke's brother — a cardinal who had opposed the marriage from the start and who inherited everything — was suspected immediately. The official verdict was malaria. Four centuries later a team took samples from the duke's remains and reported arsenic; another team disputed the finding and argued for malaria again. The case is still open, which is unusual for something this old.
Meaning
white
The Italian adjective, from a Germanic word for bright or shining that Italian borrowed and that also gave French blanc and Spanish blanco. Latin's own word for white was different and did not survive into the modern languages, which is why the Romance word for a very ordinary color is a loan.

Pronouncing Bionca
bee-AHN-kuh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The o is doing the job the a does in the standard spelling, so the change is invisible in speech; the c is hard, as it always is before an a or an o.

Fashion outlook
Bionca sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is fully familiar even where the spelling is not.
- Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English has.
- The meaning behind it is documented and plain.
- Bianca is far commoner and will be written for it constantly.
- The changed vowel removes the Italian word, which Italian speakers will notice at once.
- Readers unfamiliar with the name may try to say the o, which produces a different name.
