The story of Beverlee
Beverley in the East Riding grew around a minster founded in the eighth century and was a substantial medieval town; its name records beavers, which were native to England and were hunted out by the sixteenth century. Settlers took the name to Massachusetts, where Beverly Farms became a fashionable summer place, and in 1907 a developer looking for a name for a new Californian subdivision borrowed it, adding Hills. The given name arrived separately: it was a boys' name in the nineteenth century, went female in the 1910s and 1920s, and peaked spectacularly in the 1930s. The respelling with -lee belongs to that peak, and the name is now so firmly dated that it is almost a shorthand for the decade.
