The story of Bevan
Aneurin Bevan went down the pits of South Wales as a boy, became a member of Parliament and, as minister of health after the Second World War, founded the National Health Service on the principle that care should be free when it is needed. The same sound belongs to another Labour minister spelled differently: Ernest Bevin, whose wartime scheme drafted young men by lot to work in the coal mines, and those men are still remembered as the Bevin Boys. Bevan crossed to America as a surname and became a first name.
